Welcome to this edition of the DS Support Newsletter!

Hey Everyone! I know it's been a little while since our last newsletter...sorry about that, we recently moved and I think we are finally settled in. You know it's kinda funny, I was so worried about Brandon adjusting to the new house/school and I think he was the one who adjusted the fastest out of all of us. He keeps on surprising me every day with his abilities!

Awareness Project

DS Support still has a few copies of the teachers edition of the book My Friend Isabelle
We want to distribute them to area schools and need your help. Please pick up a copy and give it to your child's teacher. Please contact us if you would like a copy.

Isabelle and Charlie are friends. They both like to draw, dance, read, and play at the park. They both like to eat Cheerios. They both cry if their feelings are hurt. And like most friends, they are also different from each other. Isabelle has Down syndrome. Charlie doesn't.

Here it is the film we have all be waiting for. Lifetime's presentation of
"The Memory Keeper's Daughter." The best selling book was a favorite of all
who read it. If you didn't you might want to pick it up and give it a read
now.

I was able to preview the screenplay and was very pleased with its
depiction. I'm looking forward to viewing the film soon and will give you
my review. But for now, mark it on your calendar and get ready to enjoy it.

OUR ADVOCACY OBLIGATION
On the Lifetime website they have an advertisement for the film and a place
to write your comments. If we want to see more media images of people with
Down syndrome our voices need to be heard. Please go to the website via the link below and give them your comments. Do if before the film and tell them how important it is for you to see it and if you are planning a viewing
party with family and friends or that you are emailing all your contacts
about the film, etc.

Then comment again after you see the film and tell Lifetime what it meant to you. If you don't like something about the film and want to comment on it, be sure to compliment the film for something first. If they feel the community just complains we will never get more images which in the long run will help encourage full inclusion in all aspects of our loved-ones with DS lives. http://www.mylifetime.com/on-tv/movies/memory-keepers-daughter

Newsline Legislative Update
More Info
Pre-Natally and Post-Natally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act

To: NDSC and NDSS Members and Affiliated Parent Groups
From: Susan Goodman, Director, Governmental Affairs, NDSC
Madeleine Will, Vice President & Director, NDSS Policy Center
Date: February 28, 2008

On February 27, 2008 the Pre-Natally and Post-Natally Diagnosed Conditions Awareness Act (S. 1810), co-sponsored by Senators Edward Kennedy (D.MA) and Sam Brownback (R.KS) was "voted out of the committee." This means that the next step is for the bill to be scheduled for a vote by the full Senate. Senate staff thanked NDSC and NDSS for our efforts in moving the bill. Although this is a great victory, our work is far from over! We will continue to track all developments in the Senate. The next step is for a bill to be introduced and passed in the House of Representatives. It is likely that a bill will be introduced soon and the process of moving it through will begin. We will, as always, keep readers updated and Call for Action at times when our advocacy efforts will be most effective. The bill that was reported out of committee will be posted on http://thomas.loc.gov soon. However, the precise time is not known. At that time we will publish a summary of the contents of the bill.
If you have questions about this alert, please contact Susang1961@aol.com or mwill@ndss.org.

This legislative update was approved by NDSC and NDSS for joint distribution on Friday, February 29th.
